Alex Duncan

Local Authority

What do you do for a living?

My role, as Lead Technologist, within BAE Systems is to develop new material technologies for radar applications. This involves working with technical staff across the BAE Systems business and our customer base

What skills and experience do you bring to the governing body?

I believe the skills that I have developed during my working life can be applied to governing the school and include finance, project management, health and safety and developing strategic plans.
I have been a governor for 16 years, first as a parent governor and later as a Local Authority Governor. Both my son and daughter attended the school and I felt it was important that I invested my own time to support the school in achieving its goals.

Why did you volunteer to be a governor?

Personally I find my role within in the governing body very rewarding. I have been fortunate to be have been involved with the school over a long period and see many of our plans come to fruition. I believe some of the recent initiatives such as the building modifications which included relocation of the library demonstrate commitment by the governors and school staff to improving the facilities for the benefit for the children attending the school.

What committees are you involved in or what specific statutory responsibilities do you fulfil on behalf of FGB?

I have performed many roles within the governing body during my period as a governor including Chair and chair of various committees. Currently I sit on two committees: Finance & Pay and Standards & Quality.

What type of interactions with school do you have?

My main interaction with the school is through governor meetings at the school and monitoring.

What top tip would you give to anyone thinking about becoming a governor?

I believe that anyone who is thinking of becoming a governor should consider their ability to commit to the role and their skills that they can bring to support the governing body.
